Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication, PG, Pune hosted 'SIMCatalyst 2014', a platform for students to create, innovate and present their ideas to an expert panel. The competition was held at the Symbiosis Knowledge Village, Lavale, Pune. The panel of judges included Ms. Sharmistha Gupta, National Director for Branded Content at MediaCom India; Ekalavya Bhattacharya, Digital Head at MTV India; Siddharth Ravindran, Head of I nnovation and Client Servicing at MTV India; Karan Baikampadi, Associate Producer of 'Nano Drive with MTV' show and a Member of the Digital Team at MTV India.

SIMCatalyst 2014 kicked off with the task to chart an outline of a reality show which would appeal to current viewers of this day and age. The challenge, which was posed to the students of Symbiosis Institute of Media & Communication, PG, was judged by eminent stalwarts from the industry. A total of seven teams, namely French Toast Mafia, Original Gaddabouts, Path Breakers, S.W.A.G, Real Masters, Boo-yah and the Visionaries developed a concept, appraised the feasibility, drafted the media plan and discussed their revenue models intricately. As the programme unfurled, the stark individuality, effort and variety of genres exhibited by the participants were appreciated by the judges and the audience alike.

“In my experience of more than a decade, I have worked with a lot of professionals but they don’t do it like you (the student) do.” said Sharmishtha Gupta, acknowledging the passion displayed by the contestants. Mr. Ekalavya Bhattacharya was highly appreciative of the digital integration in all presentations. Elaborating further on the reach of digital, he said, “Digital is not marketing, it is business.” To every one of the contenders, the judges had a single piece of advice, “Putting yourself in the consumer’s shoes is the first step to being an excellent creator.”

The winning presentation was conceived by team S.W.A.G, named ‘Think- Jugaad yaa Jaadoo’, which the judges labelled as profitable, fully baked and feasible under practising methodologies. The runner up team was Path-Breakers, whose idea of creating a part documentary, part reality show where taboos concerning various social issues would be tackled, resonated with the judges. The event was concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr. Chandan Chatterjee, Director, SIMC PG, Pune.
