In data communications world data is defined as information that is stored in digital form. The word data is plural. Singular unit is datum. 
Information is defined as knowledge or intelligence. The information that has been processed, organized and stored is called data.

The process of data communication involves Transmission, Processing and Reception of data 

The source information may be either in analog or digital form. If the information is in analog form then it is converted into digital form by using an Analog to digital converter, then transmitted.

Receiver is again converted the signal from the digital form to the analog form by using a digital to analog converter.
