Mycobacterium tuberculosis

Pathogenic Mycobacteria

Mycobacteria are pathogens of tuberculosis. M.tuberculosis, M.bovis , M.africanum are typical tubercle bacilli causing human pulmonary tuberculosis.
Morphology.

They are non-motile , non-sporing , non-capsulated bacilli arranged singly or in groups. They are acid-fast due to mycolic acid in cell wall. With Ziehl-Neelsen stain , M.tuberculosis look slender , straight or slightly curved rods which may destroy and form granules and L-form. M.tuberculosis longer > M.bovis >M.africanum
