Now Robots can do surgery on the brain

Chinese and Japanese scientists have jointly developed a robotic system that will help improve the chances of a successful outcome of vascular surgery. The research team has successfully completed clinical trials of the system on animals, proving its feasibility and effectiveness in the implementation of vascular surgery for the treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, said Professor Robotics Institute of Beijing Aerospace University Van Tyanmyao.

The new development consists of a main control terminal, the control terminal and a screen with a navigation system, a three-dimensional image.

Since the operation, the doctors from the main control terminal with three-dimensional images of blood vessels on the screen pass a command to the robot terminal capable of stand-insert the tube into a blood vessel. The handset installed sensors that can transmit information about the contact between the tube-stand and vessel wall in order to ensure the accuracy of the intervention.

Employees of Beijing Aerospace University, the Naval Hospital PLA and Japanese Kagawa University started developing this robotic system in 2009. To implement it, the three parties have invested about 20 million yuan, or 3.17 million dollars.

The system allows physicians to pinpoint accuracy to carry out surgical operations on vessels and thus eliminate the risk for medical personnel radiation exposure, says Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery of PLA HMG Tszenmin Tien, adding that according to optimistic estimates, it will be operational within a year. According to a professor at the University of Kagawa Shuxiang Guo, the new system, which can operate on the basis of remote control facilitates the exchange between physicians who are in different places, and the training of young doctors.
