Anna university reschedules exams again

For the second time this month, Anna University, Chennai, has postponed examinations for its affiliated colleges, constituent colleges and university Departments of Anna Universities of Technology (AUTs), citing administrative reasons.

As per the original schedule, the exams were to commence on May 3, but the university rescheduled it to May 7 a few days ago. On Saturday, it once again sent out a notification to the colleges, announcing a further delay. The examinations will now be held on May 14.

Principals of affiliated colleges say the delay was expected because at least 10-15 per cent of the students in every self-financing college had not received their hall tickets.

Moreover, the earlier exam timetable issued by Anna University, Chennai, had core subjects on consecutive dates. “Students in many colleges had a problem with that because they thought it will be very tough on them as they are used to having exams on alternate days. Some colleges had also written to the university,” said a principal of a self-financing college.

This is for the first time that Anna University, Chennai, is conducting examinations for all six universities in the State. Students studying in colleges affiliated to Anna University, Chennai, and in those and University Departments of all Anna Universities of Technology (Chennai, Coimbatore, Tiruchi, Madurai and Tirunelveli) will be affected by this delay. Experts say the delay could be because the university has to set different question papers for different courses in different universities.

“There is compatibility between the different Anna Universities, but when it comes to other colleges, it becomes difficult,” said C. Thangaraj, Vice-Chancellor, Anna University of Technology-Chennai.

The aggregation of data from different colleges could also have been a problem as it could have led to technical glitches, said Prof Thangaraj. He said that till last year, since the data used to come from only from one source, it was easy compiling the single format data. “Every college uses different technology for data management so it takes time to verify and validate information,” he added.
Anna University Vice Chancellor P. Mannar Jawahar said “There will be no delay in the results though, especially for the eighth semester students who need to join companies.”

Students in autonomous colleges, however, will not face the delay and the examinations will be conducted as per schedule, from Monday.
